Charleston in All Her Glory

I cannot even imagine life in this house.

or this one.  My first thought is that's a lot of cleaning and then I remembered if you live here, you probably have "help".

A lot of the older homes do have real gas lights.  That kind of worries me.

I know what kind of money built these homes, but I do wonder where the money comes from today to buy them.  There were a few For Sale signs around.

This lady was getting a face lift

While we were planning this trip, I had seen a "Man Vs. Food" on the Food Network that featured a restaurant just outside of Charleston, that was on the water, that brought  streamed oysters to your table on what looked to me, like an old coal shovel.  Yummy.  So, Terry had been on Restaurant.com looking for a coupon.  The month of September, they sold out.  So he did get one for October.  If you are not familiar with that website, you can get really good deals for cheap.  For instance,  you can get a $25.00 voucher for $20.00 but they then have 75-80% off so it will then only cost you $4.00.  That kind of thing.

Well, off we go.... I have been wanting fresh seafood that is not fried. (We are in the south you know.)  We have to travel a bit to get to this restaurant, where the road becomes a mud fest and then there is a worn out sign that says "Not open Sunday and Monday".   It's Monday..... oops.  It was in the small print.   He bought a second one to use in Savannah that did say "not good on holidays".  We never gave Columbus Day any thought, but the restaurant did so we couldn't use that one either.

That is how we wound up in this little restaurant/bar with this gorgeous TV on the wall by us.  When it is off, it's a mirror.

Right across the street was the City Market. Building after building of all kinds of stuff.  Gullah sweetgrass baskets for sure.

I did find another Charleston print to go on my wall.

The next morning we headed off for  Drayton Hall, built in 1738 -1742,  just outside of Charleston.  I had been wanting to see it since we lived in South Carolina, but hadn't yet gone.  It's the next stop on this journey.

Charleston is one place I've never been. We sent my older brother and his wife there on vacation when he turned 50. There's such a romance about the old town.

I hope you hung around to go through that market area when it opened up. There are lots of treasures in there.

I have always wanted to go to Charleston too - I should take more east coast trips but my family lives on the west coast.

I love the tree in the header - with the Spanish moss.

Love,
sandie

Hey, I live in a much smaller, far less pretentious house and wonder who's cleaning it!! I could use help! :)

That TV frame is something!

And I'm sorry your dining adventure didn't work out so well - hopefully that didn't sap the enjoyment of the trip any (much).

Those houses are gorgeous! I'm sure they can afford help, tho. At least I hope so! Thanks for a glimpse of Charleston!

Hi Sweetie...
I just had to pop back over today and see what shares of love you had for me. What beautiful old homes. I too would worry about the gas, but I guess they have been using them for years. Aren't they just so romantic looking?

Love the big columns as they have always fascinated me. I can only imagine how gorgeous they all look at Christmas time. Magical I am sure. If only some of those steps could talk, I wonder who they would tell us had walked right through those doors.

Your luck sounds like ours, find a really neat place to go, then get there and they are closed. Sometimes though, it brings you to some of the best places ever. Love that mirror TV combination. That is really awesome. Love it.

Would love to get hold of one of those gorgeous sweetgrass baskets. Did you purchase one while you were there?

Hope you are having a glorious day. Again, thank you for the beautiful share. I loved touring Charleston with you today. Many hugs and much love, Sherry

Thank you so much for the tour! I love it when you get the old houses into your blog. I just love seeing them. My mind wanders about the history and everyting that goes along with that. I want to peek in the windows...

Thanks for tip on the restaurant deals, I'm going to check that out.

Nice homes, and I'm also glad I do not have to clean them.
