Childhood Foods

I was watching HGTV the other night and saw "The Best Thing I Ever Ate/Childhood Foods"  so Terry and I started talking about what we remembered from our childhood that really spoke of home, comfort and memories.

For him it was his Mom's cinnamon rolls with icing. (He says icing and I say frosting)  The other thing was her chili followed by cheesecake with strawberries.  It reminded him of fall weather when the four brothers and Dad would be outdoors cutting wood, putting it on the splitter and stacking it to get ready for winter in northern Michigan.

For me, I thought of that little box of crinkle cut french fires that I would cook after school to eat while I watched "Dark Shadows" (which Johnny Depp (Barnabus Collins) is remaking, by the way).  Mom was not known for her cooking but she did make awesome fried chicken.  My sister (YFS/ Your favorite sister) shared the crispy chicken liver with Mom.  I never knew YFS liked that.  I sure didn't.   She also remembered Brown sugar Cinnamon Pop Tarts when she was in High School.

So, I asked my daughters.  They always got to request what they wanted for their Birthday dinners so I was expecting lasagna, nachos, homemade pizza, or clam chowder...the things they asked for then.  No... that's not what happened.  What I got was "Otter Pops" and Coco Wheats from daughters 2 and 3.  Daughter number one said "I'm pretty sure I was raised in the same house they were and I do not know what Otter Pops are."   She remembered good ole Kraft  mac and cheese while she watched Electric Company on TV.

So I had to look up Otter Pops.   Oh, yeah, now I know.  They were right.  We had those all summer, every summer. You could get a box of 100 for $2.99 I swear.

So be careful what you ask your children.  The answers are never what you expect.

Mum's steamed apple dumpling was my favourite. We never asked what was for dinner, we asked what was for pudding.

Hmmmm...I'll have to ask my children and see what they say.

I miss my grandma's pear tarts and bread pudding, as well as mama's egg custard pie.

I do remember otter pops, by the way! LOL

You were right, I did shed a few tears while making Brandy's video. Such sweet memories.

I've asked my children what their favorite food is and they always say they like everything I fix. How nice is that? I can't name a favorite childhood food, either. My mother was a very good cook and I liked almost everything she fixed! Favorite meal would probably be fried chicken with mashed potatoes on Sundays. She almost always fixed that meal every Sunday.

Loved Dark Shadows; didn't know Johnny Depp was doing a remake, that could be interesting!

I think if I asked my son about favorite foods, it would be restaurant ones and not home cooking! But he does like the cheesecake we make.

Otter Pops are the best for summer treats!

After reading these comments and your post I have to say I am afraid to ask my kids. They may say MacDonalds or something. My mom made the best mashed potatoes and gravy.

My son's favorite meal was stew beef casserole (made with cream of mushroom soup), noodles, and peas. My favorite food as a kid was anything my mom made--she was an amazing cook!

I loved the snow cones in the freezer section of what used to be called Thriftys but is now called Rite Aid.

I also liked Nestles Strawberry Quik and Tang.

Otter Pops made me cough! :)

The brown sugare pop tarts are my favorite pop tart. They come in Pumpkin flavor now.

I think my favorite "mom-made" food was boiled corned beef and potoatoes and cabbage. My grandmother's "Fried eggplant" is high on the list too. Surprisingly, I think my all-time favorite is my Dad's pancakes (from the yellow pre-mix bottle).
